2.4 Video Series – Chemistry for Biologists

As budding Biologists, Environmental Scientists, Health Professionals etc, you will recognize that Chemistry is fundamental to the study of the various fields of biology because it provides a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underpin all life processes.

Biological functions, from cellular respiration to DNA replication, are driven by chemical reactions and interactions. For instance, enzymes, which are proteins that act as catalysts, facilitate biochemical reactions essential for metabolism and homeostasis.

Additionally, the structure and function of biomolecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids are explained through chemical principles like bonding, polarity, and pH balance.

Understanding these chemical foundations allows biologists to decipher the complexities of cellular processes, develop pharmaceuticals, and advance biotechnology, making chemistry indispensable for innovations in health, agriculture, and environmental science.

In order to assist you on your journey of appreciating the intimate relationship between chemistry and biology, a series of 20 short videos have been prepared for you.

Please access these videos at https://chemistryforbiologists.trubox.ca/ – and feel free to refer to them time and time again as you progress through your courses in Biological Sciences. These videos will assist you in successfully completing not just this Unit, but this entire course, and many other biochemistry and microbiology courses in the future.
