Chapter 4: Biomolecules

In this chapter we will begin to explore the features and functions of some of the biomolecules that support life. Generally, there are four main classes of molecules found in living organisms—carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. In this chapter, we will discuss carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins; nucleic acids will be explored in detail in Unit 4. We will also take a close look at enzymes, which fall under the class of proteins, but due to their importance in facilitating metabolic reactions, we give enzymes some special attention.
